Default 8" Axle Seal

I bought new bearings and seals from Napa for my 8" rearend today. However, the seal I acquired does not appear to be correct. I also have a question about it:

1.

This is the axle seal, right? The inner shiny piece with the leather-like material that acts as the seal? I presume I use a bearing puller to get it out? I tried prying it with no luck. I also tried pounding it out from the other side with a long rod.

2.
So, if that is the seal, the Napa seal I ordered ...

...is completely wrong, right?

3.
Once I get the seal out, and get the outer diameter, this will be what I need, correct?

4.
Lastly, what do you call this ring/what is its purpose? It is pressed on the axle shaft, just inward of the bearings. I did get a new one and will be putting it on.

Hope I didn't muck anything up by trying to remove that part >_<

To get them out, you can use a axle seal puller. It's shaped like an ice pick. They are bout 10$. Mine were in there like crazy so I had to use a slide hammer with a bearing puller attachment.

To put the new ones in, you need a axle seal driver. Or, you can save a few bucks and use a big socket. They will do the same thing. I think its like 1.75" socket or something...

But, I cant see your pictures, so I cant comment anything else than that

You can't view them or you can't see the links I posted?

Thanks for the advice though.

You can get the axle seal puller as well as the seal driver as a rental from Autozone or other auto parts stores.

The axle bearing and the retainer ring have to be pressed on and off using a hydraulic press.

The modern seals are very different from the original seals. The seals you got from napa look right to me. I just replaced the ones in my axle not that long ago.

I'm not at work, but I'm showing a NOS 13598 for the 65-66 8" axle using our web-based system. Is that what you have? Plcdude is right, modern seals may look different than the originals, but as long as the ID, OD, and thickness are right, they should work just fine.

I did get my seals out and I double checked the measurements. The part NOS13598 does appear to be correct. It is about .050 thinner than the original seal, but that probably won't make much of a difference?

When installing the new seal I recommend putting an ultrathin coat of silicone sealeant on the ouside of the metal ring. this will help it slide in to place and eliminate any chances of leeks. when I say ultrathin. I mean ULTRATHIN!!!!!
