351 swap list
alright, after a little deliberation i've come to the choice of the 351w to replace my 289.
so far i've come to the conclusion that i'm going to have to get...
a new cam (obviously this RV cam that comes with it is ****..)
a new intake manifold (351 is wider)
and possibly a new balancer since i don't know if the 289 one fits, as i do know 351w's are 28oz the same as the 289, so i'll be reusing my flex plate since it's practically brand new.
is there anything i'm genuinely missing? do the pulleys from it transfer over? if not, whats the deal with the 79-95 serpentine pulleys? can i just get a set from march and make the swap to a serpentine or will it not fit?
also, the engine comes with no timing cover, so.. does the one from the 289 fit onto the 351? or.. should i just get a whole new timing cover? this is going to be a fun swap but i don't wanna get in over my head, i don't want to replace allt he parts again considering everything on my 289 is almost BRAND NEW, and i realized a lot of it fits..

If you go with a serpentine setup, I think you will have to go with a reverse rotation water pump because the pump is driven off the back side of the serpentine belt. Not 100% though.
You will also probably need new headers.
Can't remember what year you have but the 351 is tight. Even in my 70 it is a PITA getting headers and spark plugs on and off. It will fit because a buddy of mine's dad has a 65 with a 351 in it. He has stock cast manifolds though. On my 70, I am going to notch the shock towers for more clearance. You can get an extra 2" doing this. If you are interested, here is a link where they did it on a 69 Mach I:

I have the Hedman shorty headers on mine. The intake, distributor and oil pan was the only things I had to get. The front timing cover was off the 289. I did buy a SFI balancer too cuz I am going to change to a serpentine belt later and the pulley kits are a 4 bolt, the 289 is a 3 bolt. The pulleys were off the 289 too. Hope I helped!!!
