Default Starting problem when engine is warm

I picked my car up from the paint shop today, she started right up. I drove for about twenty miles, and then decided to stop for gas. After filling up half my tank, I went to start the car. It would try to start, but it would not fire. After about five minutes it started up again. It seems like when the engine is cool then it starts right up just fine, but it warm then sometimes its hard to start.

First thing I'd try putting a spacer under the carb.
(if I understood correctly the starter runs fine. engine turns but doesn't start)

Yeah, if you do not have a carb spacer try installing one (especially if you have an Edelbrock carb). The heat transfer from the intake manifold to the carb can make a vapor lock situation. Get a phenolic spacer (its a type of plastic).

Another possibility is that your timing is too advanced.

before ya go tryin to spend a buch of money on a hunch... try holding down the gas pedal (if youarnt already)about half way as you turn the key. i give one tap and a release in the morning, but once its warm out esspecialy when its hot, i have to hold the pedal. fires on first turn over.

I would say timing. Just back it off a little.. I had the same problem after my rebuild, the carb was tuned correctly and I have a spacer, but it would not start easily when hot.

I had a similiar problem with my 66. One day it just stopped running after the engine got warm.

Do you have gas when it won't start? If you do I would say it's not a vapor lock.

Do you have spark when it won't start. We traced mine to not having spark when warm and found a bad connection off the coil.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm currently running a 289 w/302 heads, Edelbrock carb and intake. I will definitely try some of the suggestions, but unfortunately, I was trying on my new wheels and tires yesterday, and the front driver's side tire rubbed the fender. Next thing I know, I have a fuel leak. Gas was leaking for a couple minutes, then stopped, so I will have to fix that first.

sure. when done try all the suggestions, starting with those not costing any money (check timing!) and if you have points in your distributor (non electronic ignition), then adjust them _before_ you adjust ignition
