ok, where do i start,..IGNITION problems
ok,...so i turn the key, and get a loud clicking coming from the voltage regulator? is this correct? im pretty sure it is,..
battery is brand new, starter is brand new, starter relay switch is brand new and swaped out for 3 different ones and no diference,...
if i jump the starter relay under the hood the car fires right up,..runs fine
however, i have a c4 with no nuetral safety switch hooked up, could this be the problem? would this prevent the car from cranking,..
where would you start to look for this problem?,...all new wire harnesses (repo ones), all new ground wires, terminals, etc,..

No neutral saftey switch will definetly stop the car from cranking.
Find the connector that goes to the neutral saftey switch a fashion a jumper to short the 2 wires together. It will start, but, get a neutral saftey switch right away.

Well, for some reason you are not getting enough amperage or voltageacross the posts on the relay.I would get a buddy to crank it inside and take a voltmeter to the relay to see what is going on. If you can jump it there with a screwdriver I cant figure any other place but the solenoid, 3 new ones or not.

Well, have your buddy hold the ignition switch in his hand then. You will figure it out. With all of the work that you have done on this old car, I have no doubt you will figure it out. Thanks for all the posts and pictures. Its great to watch others as they rebuild their Mustangs.

Thissounds like a bad connection at the ignition switch r the relay. If you are hearing the click, something is getting there, just not enough. Look for loose wire at ignition switch.
i would have tought the loud click is coming from the starter relay.
first of all, if you have no Neutral safety switch your car will not crank unless you have bridged the connection where the switch was originally.
When you say you jump the starter relay it cranks. which 2 posts are you jumping?
The big one from battery with the big one from starter (the left and right post of the relay)?
if yes, try as next step to connect the one from battery to the one marked as 'S' fior starting on the relay.
(you will have to unplyug the 'S' connector for it.
If that works as well, then the problem is between the ignition switch and the starter relay. I'd bet on neutral safety switch.
If you don't have that switch, bypass it for a test:
i don't have a 66, but there should be a connector from the firewall that leasds red to the starter relay.
As well there sghould be a red-blue cable that originally goes to the starter relay. Hook that up for a test to the 'S' port of starter.
MAKE SURE you are in 'parking' and try to start the car. if that works, then the problem is 100% the NSS or one of those two cables.

This is an odd problem that you have.....
The NSS prevents the car from starting when it is not in Park or Nuetral. If the NSS is not installed... or not bypassed.... the ignition circuitry will not do anything. You wouldn't be getting a clicking noise coming from anything as power would not be going to anything. You'd turn the key and power would go nowhere, so nothing would be "clicking".
Odd.
The good thing is that the ignition circuitry of these old Mustangs couldn't be any simpler.
Ignition switch, starter solenoid, starter and the wiring in between are the only things in the system that really need to be looked at.
With all of the information that you have provided (good battery, good (new) wiring, jumping the starter solenoid cranks the starter), I'd look at the ignition switch.
Good Luck!
