Default 65 Fastback Trunk Lid

Hey guys, I have a 65 Fastback ground up resto and all is going well, but the Trunklid does not work correctly
The tension bar appears to be in correctly and everything bolted up right, but the lid is heavy and doesnt stay up. Any ideas? Looked at other Mustangs in car club and they seem to be the same way, but go up easy and stay?

Let me know when time allows, thanks

Is it possible for you to post a picture of the tension rod as it's connected to each hinge?

Your pictures came out perfect.

As I surmised, you've installed your tension rod backwards. Don't feel bad about this as its very easy to do. It'll physically fit either way and it even looks correct either way.

The DS end of the rod.... where the "U" shaped bend fits into the slot in the hinge.... the tension rod end (the long end that runs over to the passenger side) should be positioned rearmost on the hinge. The "termination end" of the rod should be closest to the hinge, or forwardmost.

Right now, your tension rod is working opposite of how it should. Tension is holding the deck lid downward, creating the "heavy" feel to the decklid. Tension probably increase the higher you open the deck lid.

It's a bugger to get that rod twisted in there without scratching some paint, so be careful. It's best to position theDS end correctly first, then fit the PS into the arm. Don't underestimate the power of that tension rod. It'll go flying across the room if you're not careful.

Good Luck!

Ok Dave it took me a few readings to understand what you meant, but when I got it, your directions were perfect. I didnt have to do that much work, I removed the 'end' on the Passenger Side, slid the entire rod to the (my) right a little, rolled the rod down, tweaked and half twisted the Drivers side back in, then muscled the Passenger Side 'end', back into the hole.

If I can purposely place blame elsewhere, ( ), this is how the car and trunklid came back from the paintshop. Not to say I havent done a handful of mistakes on this car myself. Most upsetting, dropping engine and tranny in car, securing all motor mounts, confirming all in tight, and then realizing my Equalizer Bar, not lining up correctly, cuz I had the Motor Mounts on opposite sides, therefore, placing the entire engine forward an inch or so of where it needed to be.... Undo all motor mounts, lift up engine, swap mounts, rinse, repeat...

Thanks Dave,
Snell

Hello, Snell.I have a question 4 u on a different subject.I also am building a 65 fastback and I noticed you have a fuelsafe fuel cell, I have installed one and purchased filler neck to fit my stock cap location.Question is, did your filler neck match the hole in the fuel cell. Mine did not,had to cut and re-align and have powered-coated. Works great now, just wondering if I got a bad neck from fuel-safe or if others had same problem. Thanks for your time.Tony in OKC.

Snell,

I forgot to mention earlier...

You do realize that your deck lid weatherstrip is not installed, right?

I did not use the original filler neck and cap, I put a plate over the hole (riveted) and painted. I am using a cap right on tank with an oversplash bowl.

The car by probably 99% of looks is original to a R Model Replica. Have had to make some adjustments to make car qualify for racing, Fuel Cell, Roll Bars, 5Pt Harness etc. I have a Lincoln Versailles/3.89 Detroit Locker (N Case Pumpkin), but other then that, pretty close to the R Models...

Yeah Dave,
The car is still no where near completion. I bought 9yrs ago, paint has been done for 3yrs and then second child came along, work, church, and everything else. I dont have WStrip on Doors either, no glass, no fluids... Just Drivetrain and Wiring, (doing wiring now). So it is a little more than a rolling shell but is basically a rolling shell. Car goes in Monday for Exhaust and then Wednesday for full Brake (redo/correction). I want to make sure I did all my prop valves and Dist blocks correctly as I am using factory 65 Front Discs with 78 Versailles Rear Discs. I dont care how fast 0-60 is, its 60-0 I worry about :P

Gimme time, Ill get there...

Snell,

The reason I mentioned it is because once you install the deck lid (and now door) weatherstrip, the deck lid (and now doors)probably won't fit as well.

It's a PITA bodywork thing. It may work out fine, but chances are good that once the weatherstrip is installed on the doors and deck lid, the panels won't close completely/align very well. The hinges will have to be loosened and the deck lid and doors re-aligned. From experience, it's always best to simulate the weatherstriping being installed by loosely attaching it during initial panel alignment.

R model clone huh? Sounds interesting....
