289 vs 351w
I forgot to mention the 3/4" thick nitrous plate, but with that I measured about 20" from the bolt that connects the motor mount to the frame (horizontal) to the flange on the carb where the air cleaner sits. That does not include the air cleaner or the choke horn on the carb, add about another 2 1/2" for that stuff (on my car anyways)
Hope that helps

The 351 will fit under a stock 64,65,66 hood.
On the 66 it will fit with a Barry Grant carb and an RPM Air Gap.... but it is very close with a very low pro air cleaner and no carb spacer....
Headman "engine swap" headers will work but we had to do a little modification (tube work) to ours (the headers not the car!)with a hammer, but nothing extraordinary, and it is not really visible, they work fine though.
You will need someaccessory brackets unless you can run the setup from the donor engine.. (serpentine?)

I dont know if the motor sits lower in the 65/66, but I just looked it up and both the rpm air gap and the victor jr have a carb deck height of 5.75". That and I am pretty certain that the barry grant carb is just as tall as any other holley based carb. Did you use some special motor mounts or something?

It should fit with no problems. The intake only sits about an inch higher than a 289/302, so a dished air cleaner will easily fix this problem.

We used aftermarket mounts purchasedfrom Mustangs Unlimited. I was going to post the link but their site is closed for maintenance at the moment.
As far as I know these mounts are same as stock height but I cant say for sure because we took a 6 out so I did not have stock mounts to compare to.
In any case the consensus was that there was no way that our combo would fit under a stock hood. Hell it didn't look like it would fit but against all odds it did! Go figure.
I know it is a very close fit and I keep meaning to make some "little clay stools" on top of the air cleaner to actually make a measurement of the clearance but I have not done it yet.
<<On edit I should say that the tranny mount on the 66 is dropped about 1 1/2" for the sake of TKO clearance. I don't think that this really matters as it relates to engine heightdue to the central placement of the front mounts, but I will mention it as a disclaimer anyway!

I did one of those clay stools on mine, I have just about an inch clearanceto the 3" cowl hood, I figure on 3/4" to insure the wing nut dosen't hit it if I was going to a taller air cleaner.
Thanks for the info on the mustangs unlimited motor mounts. I put a bolt through my o'reilly ones that lasted a little while, but I broke that bolt finally and I'm just waiting for the mount to tear in half.
I had to ding my headers also, where the idler arm bolts are, is that where yours was tight aswell?

I guess I should have mentioned that we ditched the stock steering in favor of a Rack and pinion setup...
I kind of forgot about that part till now...
Our headers had issues at the shock towers. I had to make some "modifications" that were a little beyond dimpling on two right side tubes and one left side tube,, but not really extreme....
Those mounts are nice and clean, butafter we got those I read about Ron Morris mounts that are very similar to what we bought but they are adjustable fore and aft as well. If I had to do it over again I wouldconsider the Ron Morris mounts.

We're gonna go get the 351w tomorrow along with a couple 9" rears, all with limited slip!
With the 68 Shelby FB hood it looks to be about an extra 2" clearance (no cross bracing up in there) so hopefully that'll be enough.

Hit SuperDave up he has a 408 stroker setup. He's been there done that.
Nice setup he has.
Im sticking with the 302 strokers in my 65 and 66
Thinking about a 69 f/b project for my daughter with the 408 good power form those easily obtained.
