Default ford 9 inch?

I have 66 Galaxy that I bought for parts. How can I tell if it is a 9 inch rear? Does it have any specific markings? The car had a 289 in it. It had a cruis-o-matic tranny. I bought it to help with finishing the Stang, I already robbed the radiator, starter, fuel pump, water pump, distributor and coil. All of these parts were fairly new. So I got my hundred dollars out of the car. I am going to part the rest out on Egay. I am just wondering about the rearend. Thanks opps sorry about double posting

If you can put a deepwell socket on the bottom 2 bolts without it interfering witht the pinion support then it is an 8 inch. If you cannot put a deepwell socket on it then it is an 9 inch.

It's highly unlikely that this powertrain combination would warrant the use of a 9" rearend. It could have, but it's doubtful.

Is there a large protrusion on the rear of the axle housing? A lot of the 9" rearends have this protrusion to help fit the larger ring gear. A smooth round surface on the backside almost guarantees it's not a 9".

Actually, I believe the pre-1967 9" housings did not have the large protrusion on the backside. Bottom 2 sockets are the easiest way to tell...

pre 1966 9" housings did not have the large hump.
These websites have a lot of information on spotting 9" and 8" rears
