Firewall Insulation Pad Replacement
I have a really stupid problem.
I am attempting to replace my firewall insulation pad on my '67 mustang fastback. I bought the replacement pad from paddock, which includes the plugs for attachment.
First problem is the pad does not line up with the holes on the firewall (1 or 2 line up). Second problem is the pad is simply too short across the firewall. Third problem is there is no way the included plugs will hold up this heavy pad (foam pad with a thick rubber on one side).
I thought maybe they shipped me the wrong one, so I bought another one locally at John's mustang. The pad is a different material, but it is essentially the same cut.
Does anyone have experience with this?
My solution so far is to cut the pad down the middle. The right and left fit on their own, but not together.
What am I doing wrong?

You're doing nothing wrong. You either have the wrong pad for your year car, or these aftermarket pads just don't fit very well. I would take the pad back to John's and explain the problem to them. Maybe they can either get you the properly cut pads, or at least get your money back. Then order from another company until you get the right ones.
I bought 2 pads from 2 different places. I have also gone to a third place - mustang mania and matched the pad up with theirs. While the material is slightly different with my 3 examples, all the cuts are exactly the same. I cannot believe that 3 different places with 3 different pads are all cut the wrong way (in the exact same way!). So leads me to believe I am doing something wrong.
I have flipped this thing every way I can see. I have had 3 other car guys look at it, and they are just as baffled as me. Has anyone replaced this in their car? What was your experience, did everything line up 100%, or did you have to make modifications?
There are some pop out places in the pads for things like floor e-brakes, and AC options. Again, the problem is nothing there lines up well.
