question
Something like this should make it into the "Beast" class. Anything short of this and it's not really a beast, just an "untamed animal". Beast class is reserved for all out crazyass ****.

Then after your transmission disintegrates, you can spend some more money on a new/rebuilt toploader.
And then ahigh HP driveshaft...
And then a 9" preferably nodular 31 spline rearend...
And then brakes to stop it....
And then, and then, and then.....
Figure $30k should get you started.
Good Luck!

Heheh...yeah, you need to have more of a plan than 'I wanna make it go fast.' Do you want to keep the original engine and stick with bolt-ons? Rebuild it? Replace it altogether? How are the brakes/suspension? Have to be able to stop and turn the car, too.
A car that will do 300 mph is fast, but if it takes it two weeks to get up to that speed then its not quick. I def. prefere quick over fast anyday.
Give us some more details about what you are looking for. There are several roads to "haul *** city," which one you take is pretty much your choice. Some roads get you there quickly and easily, and others are more for, shall we say, sight seeing?"Crate Motor Avenue" is probably the quickest, easiest, and straightest shot; possibly even the cheapest in the long run.
Just understand that you cant just beef up the engine and expect everything to work right, you have to beef up the rest of the drivetrain to handle all of the new found power.

Yeah, we definitely need a better idea how you want to achieve your goal and what kind of budget you're working with.
To give you an idea, back when I worked at Childs & Albert, the sales/tech guy used to field calls with, "Well, speed costs. How fast do you wanna go?"
