Where are you located?
Alabama.

Reason I even consider this 350 was because it was cheap and local. I can never find a I6 block or 289 block around here. Also me and my dad just did a vette engine swap in his 64 truck so we would know what we are doing. Ithought the answers would be no.

As long as you know what you"re getting into, from both the standpoint of mechanically accomplishing the swap and the probable "chilly" reception by lots of folks here, fine. There are a couple of sets of circumstances where some folks - by which I mean not necessarily just anybody - might be able to pull it off with some semblance of "grace" and grudging acceptance.

I"d start by assuming that it needs, and has enough meat left for, a rebuild. If you can"t rebuild it without going past 0.040" over (preferably 0.030"), pass it up and don"t look back. Bounce an expected cost of rebuild plus performance parts against a crate 331 that you can drop in more easily(some here will probably suggest a 347, but I"m of the opinion that 347 is just too many cubes for the small Windsor motor at least as far as long-term reliable daily/street driving usage is concerned).

Either way, you"re looking atnearly a completepowertrain replacement, whether you do that all at once or piecemeal as you can afford (or as stuff breaks). Cooling, suspension, brakes, etc., etc.

What is the structural condition of the chassis? I"d argue here that if it"s anywhere between poor and not very good (but still salvageable) you have a stronger basis for doing a cross-marque engine swap, as you could feel somewhat more free to stiffen/strengthen where structure needs to go (or can go), ratherthan being under any pressure to maintain the OE structure. None of the 1960"s cars were very good structurally, and the Falcon/Mustang was no different (the members that tie the shock towers to the cowl being a noteworthy exception). But understand that this is a more advanced task than doing the engine/powertrain mods and the swap combined. And I"d not want to rework a chassis that was in very good condition or better.

If you still desire to stay I6, stay patient, it is common for good running I6 "take out" engies to become available on the forum.

Hey I sold a professionaly rebuilt I6 engine/clutch/tranny with less than 10,000 miles on it delivered 1200 miles for $400.00.....

Be patient....

I am. I have seen I6s for $100. I want to build theengine and make it able to use a turbo. I don't want to risk my original engine. I am also thinking about making a raceI6 for the mustang. We have a 1/8th mile track about 15 minutes away from the house.

$40 seems like a good price for a boat anchor. The answer isn't just no, its HELL NO! Small block Chevys are great engines. I have built many of them. But they are only great in a chevy. If you want a Ford, build a Ford. Period.

Besides, why do you have your mind set on an I6 or a 289? A 302 will bolt right in as well and the normal somebody wouldn't be able to tella 302 apart froma 289. The Chevy swap is just a bad idea.

Agreed.

Ford moved to the 302 motor in the late 60's... roughly 40 years ago.Salvagable 289's are getting harder and harder to find. Focus on looking for a 302 motor and you'll have much better luck.

Good Luck,
Dave

Well my friend has a 302 and he keeps saying that his car is better than mine. I don't want to copy him at all. Reason I am stuck on I6 is if I replace my engine with another I6 you won't be able to tell I swapped, I could got from my 200 to a 300 and you could only tell by the height of the engine. If I could find a 80s 302 I would get it.

This is an easy fix and I can save you a whole bunch of time and money.

The next time your friend is talking smack, open your hood and show him your new "refractor valve" that's installed on the back of the carbuerator. When he says "where is it?", tell him to standby the drivers side fender and lean in and look up under the air cleaner. When he does this, close the hood on his head/shoulders, not hard, but hard enough to prevent him from getting up.....and say "Whose car isbetter now biotch?" Don't let him up until he.... 1. looks like he's getting ready to damage something.... or 2. Professes that your car is better than his (make him repeat it a few times... loudly).... or 3. Goes limp.

That should do it.

Just tell him that an inline 6 is inherently balanced but a V8 only gets balanced "by fortunate coincidence". That"s one measure of "better". You can also get a smooth, E-typeJaguar-like snarl out of the exhaust just by properly combining the header primaries (and this is really simple for the header mfrs to do - most do it this way because it"s the easiest way as well).
