Default Spring Solutions for Sag

My 67 rear is sagging takeII.

Thanks for all the replies to my previous post looking forsolutions to rear wheel rub when I have rear passengers. Well I took some of the advice and went to get a set ofleaf spring helpera at Advanced Auto and they suggested putting on some spring coiled shocks instead of the leaf helpers to stiffen the rear up. These are not the model but they look something like the ebay link. Anyway, from my original post someone suggested air shocks and others said that could result in a failure of the metal around the shock mounts. I am guessing the same sort of failure could occurr with these spring shocks but wasn't sure. Would you consider these sort of spring shocks to allow the car to carry a little more weigth or go with some leaf helpers???

I cannot get the ebay picture here at work, but any sort of spring assist that runs its load up into the shock mounts (or even if distributed locally around the shock mount)is eventually going tofatigue the metal around the shock mount. 250 lbs shock load (going over a bad bump) plus 150 lbs static load that increases to 200 lbs or more over that same bump is noticeably worse than just the 250 by itself. Those numbers are for illustration only and are not exact by any stretch of the imagination. But I don"t think they"re way off either. A stiffer set of "helper" springs (say 100 lb/in instead of the above 50) that maintains rear ride height more tightly to whatever it was set to would be worse still.

Best fix is new leaves. Anything else is a band-aid.

I don't know why you would want helper springs when aftermarket leaf springs are readily available. Just get some 4-1/2 leaf of 5 leaf aftermarket springs and replace the old worn out ones that are in there now.

By the time you buy the helpers, you're most of the way to replacements leafs. Spend the extra money. Laural Mountain Mustang seems to have about the best price on rear springs.

1. The shocks linked are NOT what your friend at advance was talking about
2. I am all for simply fixing it right which is new leads.

Why spend money on a bandaid? Don't carry anyone in the rear till you get new springs.

I had a style like that on my 67's rear and didn't have any damage done. And theylooked like they were on there for a LONG time. But like everyone else said, just spend alittle bit more and fix the problem for good.

www.laurelmountainmustang.com has good prices on springs and the ones I got from them seem good quality. 5 leaf is too stiff IMO. I wish I would have bought 4.5 mideye leaf springs instead...

KYB Gas-A-Just shocks are agreat shock for the price...

Yeah no air shocks or those coil over type shocks they put too much stress on the upper shock mount.A helper spring or load leveler whatever they call it will fix that problem for a year or two its best to get new springs. And after you replace the rear ones you'll see the fronts a little low too lol.
