Tach?
Ok i am wondering how to put a Tach in a 64 1/2 stang with the original C4 Automatic tranny and 289 Motor... I am also wondering how to install and what brands work the best... also there is no tach to start with so any help experts?
Hi,
I like the looks of the rally pacs with the tach and clock in them. The tach and clock have been improved from the originial ones. They are pricey though. I bought an original rally pacon ebay and had the tach upgraded by Redline tachs. Works great. I think Redline also has a good selection of aftermarket tachs too. Most tachs now connect to the coil.

for me it had to be the rally pac.
They're quite expensive but WELL WORTH IT
i just put one in (1 week ago) and that's what it looks like now.
if you buy it of sacramento mustang, you'll get it with the factory underdash wiring cable that you will need. As well there was a spare bulb in the packet. See here:

I wanted to get an original off eBay, but the prices for old, rotten ones are crazy.
You only want an original one if you're going concours with your car.
The difference to repro and orig is only inside as far as i know. The new ones have quartz clocks (that are accurate as compared to the old ones) and they don't tick (the original ones do).
Then there is 2 profiles of rally pacs. low and high. with a 64.5 model (same cluster as I have) you'll need a low profile one (65 model). the first one in the link shown. the one below is for 66 models (don't buy that).
if your underdash wiring is original then it's just a matter of conecting a few cables (no cutting etc). There's the original instructions with it. If you have problems installing the wiring let us know.
oh and if you're running MSD ignition then this will not work for you (info manufacturer and tachman). pertronix or original points is ok.
This tach is a currentsensing tach which is quite rare. most cars use a tach that is hooked up directly to the coil (or distributor in case of HEI). this is not one of em ....
hoipe that helps a bit

The factory 67 tachs are current sensing. They are part of the ignition system when installed.Disconnect the tach and the car dies.
Itdidn't hook up like a regular aftermarket tach. IE. Red=hot, Black=ground Green= -side of coil and Blue=light
I'm betting the Rally Pac tachs were the same way.

greystallion: you can do that to a modern tach what I sometimes call a "normal" tach. but not to original factory tachs or rally pacs. tehy're different
