3.80 swap progress (first drive! Weeee)
Wellllllllll.
I think its okay.
Its totally quite and smooth, with the exception of a very slight howl in coast...guessing that will clear up. I never got above 10% throttle but dead stop accelerations are much nicer now I dont have to smoke the clutch to get it to roll out
I dont see any oil leaks so im keeping my fingers crossed as getting center in was a PITA because it was fricken heavy and it was humid out and 103F and it didnt want to line up [&:]...so no oil leaks....ever..I hope
The only bad thing was the new 21 tooth speedometer gear died instantly....I was all proud of myself for getting that taken care of so I could tell how fast I was going before I drove it... Any ideas? I have the yellow drive gear so thats 7 tooth right? and the 21 tooth should work according to that chart someone sent me...It lasted under 1 second two of the teeth have been run over by the drive gear and flattened out...WTH?
Small loss indeed for a project of this size so im still really happy....If it doesnt leak oil

Well its an origninal cable I think and the gear I got had a bit longer cable end reciever maybe 1/4" or so longer. It felt like it fit fine.. So can I get that gear from a dealer? just give them that PN?
I really dont want to remove the trans yet especially not just to replace the drive gear...Ill do that when I rebuild it.
Thanks for the help...Im excited to see what it does when I floor it

Okay thats another question i Have .....how the hell are these speedometer gears suppost to work anyhow???
The diameter of the 18t driven gear is the same as the 21 tooh driven gear???
If I have two sets of gears that mesh properly and both sets have 1" drive gear and 2" driven gear but set A has 20 teeh and set B has 1,000 teeth the ratio is still the same....How do they cange the ratio by adding more teeth?
SECOND
how can a drive gear mesh with a 18 tooth driven gear and a 21 tooth driven gear????

Yeah but on the 10 speed bike the gear sizes changed with tooth count. 18 tooth gear had a smaller diameter than the 21 tooth gear.
As far as I can tell the 18tooth speedometer gear (or whatever I pulled out of there) looked like the exact same diameter...maybe not tho.
Thats good to know about the tail housing.
Ill try a few more 21 too gears first.
Drive gears for t5 only come in 3 colors right? Black, Yellow, Green????? there is no white or cream or lightish pink is there?

Got the 21 tooth speedometer driven gear to work!
The problem with the first one was the speedometer shaft reciever was too long.
The cable fits into that peg on the gear which has a square hole to drive the cable. That peg on the 21 tooth gear happens to be very long and runs into the inside of the case on the T5 before the cable plug fits flush with the hole on the t5 case.
So what happens is when you tighten the keeper down on the cable it adds force to the plug so it doesnt fall out BUT that plug is not flush with the case and it jams the end of the speedometer gear peg into the t5 and the gear cant spin.
I just cut about 1/4" off of the end of the peg and it works great now.
Its pretty close because its for a 3.73 rearend and I have a 3.80 its off a bit at higher speeds I guess the only way to make it more accurate would to be put a taller tire on the rearend right?
They dont make a gear set thats matched right on for 3.80s and a 25" tall tire do they?
