69 Mach 1 hood/side stripes/rear stripe: vinyl or paint?
so far the common consensus is that the hood is flat black paint (although one person claims it is "Castulum" paint, which i couldnt find ANY results on) while the side and rear stripes are 3M vinyls. however, my dad is still fairly certain that he read somewhere that its all vinyl. my guess is that he read about vinyl repros, thinking they were originals. our current hood (of course) and side/rear strpies ar ein black, and will stay that way. can anyone prove the hood is paint? thanks in advance.
The hood is paint. At least all of them I have seen are, and I was around when they were new. The stipes are vinyl. Some people have tried to paint the side stripes but there is a lot of detail and you can't get the refectivity that is in the vinyl. They are tricky to apply straight.
Yes the hood in paint, email me and I will send you a document with all the striping dimensions and the paint to be used.
The side a rear stripes are a vinyl and yes I believe mine was made by 3M, not too sure though. What I do remember is the repro was a ford licensed product, so it's good stuff. I thought about having the stripes painted on because it would be so flush with the paint (after clear coat) but decided against it since it wouldn't have the right reflectivity that the vinyls do, which is a safety feature. My body shop was fully capable of painting it on but I still decided against it.
And yes they are very hard to apply straight, and in fact mine aren't perfectly straight, I think the body shop could have done it better. But hey, they weren't the straightest from the factory and it is one of those things you can always get removed down the road if they get damaged or you just want it better.

If I remember the article I read on this correctly, the Mach1 hood should be flat and applied over the base color and after the clear coat. The believe the orginal paint was done after the car was painted which leaves a little bit of a ridge between the black and the base color. I have heard of some guys shooting the flat black right after the base color and then clear coat over all of it to get rid of the ridge, but I do not believe that is concourse correct if that is what you are after. The sides are definitely stickers and change color from black to goldish in the light. NPD has stencils to get the hood right and also sell the side stickers.
I am restoring a 69 mach 1. would you please send me the document on striping and paint for the hood. Thanks jdhicks0470@yahoo.com
