Something that hasn't been mentioned here (yet)....

Although not as stout as a V8 T-5, the 4 cyl T-5s will usually hold up behind a stock 302 just fine. The input shaft on the 4 cyl T-5's is different than the input shaft on the V8 T-5's, but it does not need to be changed to work/fit. Instead of changing the transmissions input shaft, you can change the crankshaftspilot bearing to that of a ....... dammit.... it's escaping me at the moment..... Mitsubushi? Mazda B2000?... someone will chime in with the correct pilot bearing for the swap.

And...

Obviously the clutch fork will be needed from the donor car/transmission also.

Good Luck!

dave i found two good conditioned T5s one behind a 4cyl msutang and a 6 cyl ranger.

i heard that these are too weak. but i will add my msutang is almost all original so if they rated it at 200Hp 40 years ago im willing to guesstimate at 150 today if not less. so will my car suffice for now if i drive moderately? i plan on builiding up the engine in a year or two, but by then i wouldnt mind rebuilding the trans. as of right now i commute 60 miles on a busy high way and the three speed is kinda bumming me out.

my cars nothing special, open end diff and basic 289. will the lower class T5 be okay for a year untill im more settled at school?

I cannot speak from personal experience, but everything I've read from other Mustang owners who've done the swap and used the 4 cyl T-5 transmission is positive. As long as the engine is "mild" and the transmission is not "beaten on", it supposedly holds up just fine.

The good news here is that the used 4 cyl. T-5s can be picked up for around $150.... whereas the V-8 T-5's command a much higher price.... $400-500 around here.

If possible, do not overlook the shifter when gathering your used parts. You can change out the shifter "stick" (so that's it longer.... more comfortable of a grip/throw/reach in our classics), but you'll still need the lower housing portion that bolts onto the top of the transmission.

thanks, the junkyard the car is at wants 100 for the trans. and all the other goodies.

the shifter felt good. even if i needs a rebuild 100 is almost too good to pass up, for less than 500 i could rebuild it and have a new trans down the road.

67Bullitt

If its a Non world class (NWC) I wouldn't spend the money to rebuild it simply because it can not be rebuilt to WC standards....It cant be upgraded.

For a 100 you can find WC trans that has some damage to it and for the same cost as NWC trans (about 500) you can have it running great. If your gonna spend 500 to build up a nice trans might as well start with a good core. (the world class WC)

You can tell if its WC or NWC by the tag code. This is an actual tag bolted to the trans use this link to decode it.

you gotta make sure its not a NWC it could be WC...Ask for the tag number...remember its off the tag that is bolted onto the case where the tail housing bolts to the main case.
