Default gas tank

Hello. I am going to replace the original gas tank in my 70 coupe and was wondering what do I do with the old one? I would guess its not safe to put at the curb for the trash guys? Will get as much gas out as possible but it will still have fumes in it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you can, the preferred method of ridding fuel cells of gas/fumes is "purging". Either with forced air or water. The easiest way is to get all of the liquid gas out and then stick a garden hose in it and let it run for a few hours. I've worked inside larger fuel cells before and after a day or two of forced air ventilation, they're usually safe to work in.

When I took mine out, I just dumped the old crap out, rinsed it out real quick, forgot about it for a few weeks behind the shed, and then it was fine

Hey, sounds like a good idea to me!...However, I'd be standing around a corner and using a stick with the match taped on the end

good question. I was thinking the same thing since I am replacing mine on Friday.

My thought is I am going to get all the gas out of it that I can. Then rise it with water for an hour or so then leave it in the back yard for a few days. Gasoline evaporates really fast.

When it has been washed good and aired out for several days I am going to take mine to the local "recycle center". That is where you are supposed to take old gas cans, old paint, etc. At work we are getting ready to move the office in a couple of days so we took a bunch of old PC monitors and things of that nature over to the recycle center. They charge something for PC monitors but I think they will take some other things for free.

Might be worth checking into or making some calls in your area.

If nothing else, there is a local Pick a part in my area that might take it.

No I'm not, I'm 17. And yeah I'm sure SOMEONE has done it, but we'll never know because they probably arn't around to tell the tale. I just thought I would put that as a disclaimer so someone here doesn't read that and be like "OOO thats easy enough!" lol
