Default Mustang Project Log

Ok everybody!

This is alog for my 1966 Coupe with a I6. This car will be my daily driver. I am going to post photos and updates and best of all LOTS OF QUESTIONS (gunna put questions in red font if you wanna just look at those) here as we get this car up to drivable condition.

A little history: I got the car as a Bday/Xmas present last year. My Dad has owned the car forever and now I have it. It needs some work, but not too bad. So far we have replaced the exhaust manifold...that thing was horrible. There was a bar separeting two of the ports that had been completely eaten away over the years.

We are now in the process of replacing the wiring harness. The wiring is screwed up already. The right tail light stays on whenever the battery is connected and the left won't come on at all (it isn't the bulb, I checked)...I'm going to print off a diagram and try to figure it out.And the horn doesn't work... Have a ways to go here.

The Carb started to leak gas last time I drove it, so we pulled that off and are looking for a replacement. Do you guys have any ideas as of where to finda new carb? Any companys you recommend (would like to find a decently priced one)?

Has anybody on here replaced their trans with an automatic? I am considering doing that. Right now it has a manual 5-Speed that needs work anyways (slips out of 1st gear). The main use of this car will be around town, so I think that an auto could be better for when I'm just cruising around. It has had an automatic in it before, but has been put back to the manual.

For a little customisation I think I will raise the rear end and put some wider tires on there (has been done before). I will eventually upgrade to front disks, and may end up putting our extra 289 in there someday.

I will post pictures along the way for anyone that is interested.

Why dont you call it a project log instead of a diary.

sounds kinda girlish.

other than that it looks like a great start.

Thanks! That was a good idea. It did sound girlie now that I think of that. [sm=crossbonesgif.gif]

I've driven it around the neigborhood a couple times, and it has been fun so far. Can't wait to get on the road with it though.

question. why do you want to convert it to auto.

do you know how to drive a manual?

I can drive it as a stick, but I think with the amount of traffic here an auto would be easier. Or does the stick just get to be second nature after a while?

second nature. for sure.

you will never catch me buying a auto car.

plus with the limited horsepower you have you want to make use with as much as you have. plus its quite the job converting.

my suggestion is just brining it to a place and have it rebuilt.

itll end up as much as a auto anyways.

you need to do all the things you listed out, plus a power brake booster or disk conversion is a must.

OK, I'll probably leave it manual then. I plan on doing a front disk conversion eventually.

there is a guy in surprise,az that rebuilds t5 transmissions for $250 total. if you want it to handel up to 400hp then he will do it for $350.
he has an add on craigslist. i have a couple friends that have used him and he is great. if shipping is too much for you you can probably get it done close to you for a similar price.

instead of raising the back why not lower the front a little.

Thanks for the t5 tip! I'll look into it. (newbie question but is that the only 5-Speed for mustangs?)

Is lowering the front easier than raising the back?
