need help with my 68
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forums and tried posting in one of the others. From everything I read it looks like the people in this thread are much nicer and more willing to help others. So, I'm going to try and post my question here.
I just got my first Mustang. A '68 coupe. Been working on trying to get one for about 2o years now. Probably wouldhave gotten it sooner but life happened along the way.The car is in pretty good shape and has rust in the usual places, but not a lot of it. I'm planning on starting at the front and working my way back. I'm taking off the fenders and getting everything out of the engine compartment right now. I'm finding some rust but am not totally sure how much to worry about it. It's mostly surface rust under the fenders and on bolts and bolt holes. Can anyone tell me how much of this I really need to worry about? And, are there any products out there that will help with the rust issue?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance for the help.
Damian

Welcome to the forums. There is a product called Por 15. My grandfather used Por 15 on his 66 and it looks good. I also know some of our members can tell you about how good it is.

I purchased a Mustang this year after several years of waiting also. Like you, I started by removing the fenders and am going to replace the front suspension. I've found hidden rust and plan to use Eastwood's Rust Converter. For surface rust, I plan to clean off the rust and paint with Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator.
any kind of spray that works on contact is good. we have this spray bottle called "Rust-Prep". its rank but works great.
the best kind of rust aid is a wire wheel and a drill
just start taking stuff apart, clean up with a wire wheel and apply a coat of primer and paint, and put back together.

He's right. It sounds like you have mostly surface rust. I dealt with a fair about of that on my 65. Clean it off, prime it and paint it. POR-15 and various rust converters are great, but they are intended for use where you are not - or can not - going to remove the rust. POR stands for Paint Over Rust. By the way, I ended up here the same way you did. I looked around the various forums and this one may not be the biggest but it is maybe the friendliest site you'll find. Welcome to our home!

Thanks for the help everyone. It's appreciated!
How much does everyone worry about rust when restoring your car? I'm a bit perplexed as to how much you really worry about and how much is "normal". Not sure if it matters or not but I live in a really dry climate and the car will be garaged.
Not sure I have the $$$ to get the car in perfect condition, but want to do it right so we can enjoy the car for many years to come without worry about it rusting out.
Thanks!!!!!!!
