Miserable Day
Hey everyone, here's the story. I"ve got a 68 coupe that I just bought a remanufactured engine for. I got the engine in after I sandblasted the engine bay to bare metal and painted the bay gloss black and the engine ford blue and put shorty headers, an edelbrock 600 cfm carb and an edelbrock performer intake on it. It was running great with only a few small bugs to sort out and I've been driving it around on short trips and a couple trips of about 100 miles or so with no problems. One of the times that I tried to shut it off, however, it stayed running. I had a spare ignition switch, so I swapped it out and it worked fine for the next few times. Today, I decided to take it to dinner with my family and when i went to back it out of the garage, I had no reverse. I pushed it out and decided to drive it anyway. ( The C-4 is getting rebuilt with a shift kit in the next week or two anyway.) It drove fine until I got to the gas station and tried to shut it off and it stayed running. I went ahead and filled it up with premium ($60.00[:@]) and went to the restaurant which is about 3 miles from my house. When I got there, I backed into the parking spot (reverse worked fine then lol) and had no power steering. I got the car into the space and turned the key off and again, she stayed running. I got out and pulled the coil wire off of the dist. cap to shut it down. I should have pulled the battery cable but, like an idiot, I forgot. I ate dinner (chicken wings) and returned to the car to find a pool of type F trans fluid under the PS pump (that explains the lack of power steering). I go to start her up and when I turn the key, smoke comes through the turn signal louvers in the hood. I jump out to find the ignition-to-coil wire smoking and the end melting off of it. I got a ride home from my uncle so i could get my tools and my truck and when i came back, I tried to just use a jumper wire to replace the burned one just so I could get it home because I wasn't too thrilled with the thought of leaving it in a dark parking lot until after work tomorrow. I tried to start it unsuccessfully. I had my tow strap in my truck and my dad was with me (the car is half his, too) so I figured i would just pull it home where it would be safe since it was only a couple miles. I made it about 2 thirds of the way when the strap snapped due to slack in the line. I got out of the truck and re-tied the strap and headed for home. We made it to the top of the last hill before my house (the house is at the bottom of the hill). I Nextel'd my dad and and made sure he knew to keep some tension on the strap while going down the hill. We got to within 30 feet of the driveway when I feel a CRASH in the truck. The brakes went out on the Mustang, sending it straight into the hitch on the back of my truck. We pulled into the driveway and I jumped out and discovered that the bumpe, valance panel, and 1968 license plate are all smashed in. My truck was undamaged. The good news is that I have a spare bumper and valance. Sorry for the long post, just had to let it all out...
man how many black cats have you run over lately????
in terms of the "wont turn off" part have you got a diode in the alt wire? sounds like your alt is powering the car once the ignition is off.

As a rule, I normally don't believe in coincidences..... but... [:@]
That is a whole lot of stuff to go wrong at once...
It sounds like you might have a lot of loose ends to take care of!
I was going to mention that you would want to convert to a dual master cylinder when you fix your brakes, but damn, your year car should already have a dual MC.... total brake failure with a dual cylinder is yet another far fetchedcoincidence.. [:@]

Well, I dug the spare front bumper and valance panel that I had in the basement out. I polished the bumper up good as new and painted the valance panel to match the car (not perfect, but the whole car's getting painted eventually anyway). After getting a closer look at the coil, I noticed that the front of it was cracked open. I put a new coil on it and replaced the fried wires and she fired right up. A couple days later, I found the blown brake line (it was the rubber line that goes from the chassis to the rearend. It had been rubbing against the shock until it finally wore through). I now have everything back to the way it was and I'm back to happy.
