Oooo, Dat Smell
Just got my '65 Coupe back from the mechanic. New carb, air pan, tuning...
Driving it home, the wonderful smell of exhaust filled the car. I am still trying to get over the buzz (or get oxygen back to my carbon monoxide ridden cells).
So, for you die hards who have had 'Stangs, is this something I should get used to? I know that air was being pulled in through the vents, but believe I got them closed. Windows were open, but it still stank it up.
Had the exhaust done last year.
Thoughts anyone?

Make sure the exhaust is sound from front to rear. Listen for the tick, tick, tick, leak of an exhaust manifold gasket. Check for the fap, fap, fap, leak of a doughnut gasket. Put your foot over the tip and listen for phfit, phfit, phfit leaks from the pipes. If it's sound, look for blow by coming from the valve cover breather. Then move to the rear...Are there holes in the trunk? Are the pipes too short?
Sorry, but there is no excuse for a stinky car. Does not impress the chicks.

Make sure the PCV valve is working. Check the firewall for holes.
As everyone said, listen for leaks in the exhaust system.
The exhaust doesn't necessarily have to dump past the valence but it should be near there. If it turns down anywhere near the bumper , and you smell exhaust, then you most likley have a leak, further foreward.
With a new carb, you may just need to tune it a little better. My car did not stink before I changed out my brake booster. The booster had a vacuum leak so I was sucking more air, and I tuned it with a vacuum guage when I had the leak. There was no smell until I fixed the booster. Now there is no vac leak, but Im running rich so It smells up the car pretty bad.. Just check for vac leaks and then tune with a vacuum guage and that should get rid of most of your smelly problems.. Seriously!
