Default 69 MACH 1-correct engine

I have a 69 Mach 1. I have a question concerning the engine. I know my motor is not the original 351 w but how do I know what is correct for my car. I will be restoring shortly and will this effect car value

it could be anything from a 351 2 barrel to a 428cj, I have the 4 barrel 351 windsor which is the "M" code

check thourghly

the H code carefully

because they made two kinds of 351 2bbl motors

one is a Cleveland motor and one is a Windsor motor. big difference.

completely different blocks.

In 69 the 351w was the base engine in a mach. The cleveland was not available until 70 so that can be ruled out first. As long as the date codes on the engine and components are before the build date on the car you are in good shape. Unless you have a boss shelby or cobra jet car there will not be any numbers matching on your mustang because ford did not due things like that on most cars of that era.

The Cleveland did not make its way into a production Mach 1 until the 1970 model. A few of the early production 1970 Mach 1 models did have 351 Windsor 2V. (I have one) Ford changed the base power plant to a 351 C 2V during the assembly run for the 70.
So a 1969 Mach1 could not be optioned with a 351 Cleveland. Can you put one in? Sure!

^exactly what I was gonna say

the codes are H, M, Q, and R I believe. both Q and R are 428cj's but one has the shaker, I think it is the R that has the shaker but I am too lazy to figure it out. H is 2 barrel, M is 4 barrel. and i'm not sure if I'm missing other engine codes for the mach 1 but i don't think so

Id pick a Windsor over the cleavland any day

but yeah, as stated, 1969and early 1970=351w-428cj (of which i believe all 428's had shaker hoods) rest of 1970=351c-428cj
