Need quick info...
Hey all, I'm new hear and have a 67 Mustang Coupe. Right now I'm in the middle of changing out the non original 302 for a 351W. I'm estimating it's going to be about 300hp to the rear wheel. It has the 3spd manual tranny. My main concern is that in about a year or so I want to bring it to about 400rwhp, but need to do some tranny work and rear end work. My question is, what transmissions can I bolt to an 89 and newer block without having to do any major modifications? I would love to turn this car into a G machine and equip it with a 6spd, but I'd go for a 4 or 5 spd also. The rear end, when I looked up my vin said it was a 7 something rear end, nothing worth a damn, but then a kid that said he knew a bit about rear ends said it looked like an 8inch, but there is no tag to tell for sure. I just read the forum a couple under mine saying that an 8 inch could be built up well. My question for that is, how can I tell FOR SURE, that it's an 8 inch, and also what do I need to do to beef it up so I don't kill it. Thank you ahead of time for any and all information.
Also, how about how much should I ask for the 1974 302 complete filter to oil pan with a Holley 600cfm carb? It ran like a charm before I pulled it out, just wasn't putting out the numbers I would have liked. It put 150hp and 214tq to the rear wheels. Just curious because I would like to get rid of it and I'm not sure what to ask for it.

Really quick, I'm looking at T45 out of a 97 Cobra or a 3650 tranny out of an 04 mustang. I'm not sure if these will bolt up or not, just transmissions for sale near me. Also there is a 9inch out of I believe an 84 bronco, not sure how much work it would take to fix.

The 8 inch will have 5 lugs and WILL have a removable carrier. The 7.5 inch is integrated.
Good luck.
Like said, the 7.5" will have 4 lugs axles and the 8" will have 5 lug. Another option is the 9" which will have 5lug like the 8", but an easy way to tell is that on the backside there will a large "hump" and 2 small dimples.
I wouldn't bother with the Bronco, you'd have a shorten the housing and axles, and relocate the spring pags, just so it could fit under the car..

Well I would get the 9" and narrow it now with 31 or better spline. His goal is to have a monster (like mine
)so if your going to spend the money, do it right now and not do it twice. If I was to do it over, narrow the axle right down and buy deep dished wheels with that big lip look.

Yeah I just looked at the picture, it's got a five lug on the back. I know it's not a 9inch though. I'm not sure I plan on having a s/c monster like you though haha, a nice car with some good hp that I can still cruise around town in but will get some giddy up when I hit the throttle. SO I guess my question now is now that it's pretty safe to say I have at least have an 8 inch, what do I have to do to beefen it up to accept about 300rwhp or so without snapping the heck out of something? I'd much rather play with what's in it for now then to have to take it all off.
Yea, but you could find an original style housing and skip the headache of shortening everything. They aren't too hard to find on the net. I got mine for 125shipped and it was in excellent shape... 31spline axles were 280$...You'd probably have that much in shortening your old axles alone...

Why not do as you say, and play with what is in it. If/when something breaks - then upgrade it. We've determined you don't have the 7.5 back there anymore. But you do have to take into account the 'stranded' scenario...

As far as the transmission. Neither of those will work. The modular engines have a slightly different bolt pattern. You will need a 4 speed toploader or a new Tremec TKO 5 speedto handle the torque you will be making (assuming you actually reach the posted power numbers you are expecting, which is totally possible). Don't even waste your time with a T5.
