Default Timing

Can anyone point me to where i can learn how to time my 66 mustang? it has a 68's 302 2V in it. I tried searching the forums but it came up saying no results. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

factory shop manual says 8 degrees before TDC at idle, vacuum disconnected and plugged (so that the carb does not suck air through your hose while you do that)
the max advance (centrifugal advance without vacuum) should be around 32-35 max at 3200 as far as I know.
most people set timing at 10 or even 12 at idle as it runs better. Mine runs better with 10 than 12
when you feel your starter does rather a whop-whop-whop than a whopwopwop you might be too far advanced
obviously you will need a timing light to set this
If you still run points in your distributor you will have to adjust them first as they have affect on timing and spark.
When finished re-check timing with vacuum hose connected it should not change. if it does you might have the wrong port on carb for vacuum pickup.

if you have that set, and you still suspect the timing could be wrong, then obviopusly check plugs and leads.
Furthermore a slipped harmonic balancer might cause to show you wrong timing marks

k thanks everybody. I'm hoping to get up early enough tomorrow to do this. I really miss driving Roxxanne. Right now I'm stuck driving a 90 Honda...it's just not the same! I have a Haynes manual, but its not very helpful to me.
