Default reverse light/neutral safety switch plug for toploader

I have a question that only a few of you may be able to answer. I purchased a top loader that has a switch mounted to it. It is for the reverse lights. Now, the question I have is, why does it plug into the same plug that my C4 neutral safety switch plugged into. Do they share the same plug? It does work for the reverse lights but I'm wondering if that same switch was the neutral safety switch for a standard transmission. If anyone know please fill me in. I was told I have to have a neutral safety switch if I want to run at the local track, even if I do have a toploader.
