Default Perfect Paint Job?

Is these really such a thing as a perfect paint job?

People say my car looks great, little do they know it has many flaws? A speck in the clear here and a touch of orange peel there.

I honestly made my self crazy taking my car back to the shop to finish the job properly.

Maybe its a california thing, but when you pay BIG money for custom paint and body, you expect it to be done right with no flaws, right?

My questions are:

a) To those who have been there and done that with a compleat paint and body resto, could you honestly say your paint and body is 100% the way you wanted it to be?

b) Also how many times did you take your car back and how many shops did you use?

No such thing in my opinion. If the car gets driven, it will always have a few flaws.

I paint my cars. I have high standards, but gave up on "perfect" a long time ago. I don't care which newly painted car you give me, I'll find a flaw on it somewhere...... whether it costs $1000 or $20,000, "perfect" is pretty difficult to accomplish.

From a person that used to do alot of body work... there is no such thing. And you have to realize that you will notice every little thing... like I do on my car. But the average person isn't going to notice. There is close, but NOT perfect.

This helps me out a bit, im sure all of us have our very own "EYE SORE" on the car that knowbody else can see but you.

At this poit I wonder what the difference between an 8k job is and a 13k job in means of flaws? Not much im sure.

Usually nothing more than about $5,000 and bragging rights.

Honest truth, you reach a plateau in paint quality around 9 grand IMO.

Yeah mine is not perfect, but I have not taken it back to the shop yet for blemishes and small scratches (some from the body shop, some from me) One thing my body shop messed up on is a run in the clear in my headlight bucket that is not noticeable, but once you see it its big. A few other things were me but are minor. Once I finish it up some more I'll take it back to my shop because I know they will do a good job and should be honorable with the stuff that IS there fault, I documented a number of things when we got it back that are their problem haha.

But even still a fabulous paint job, and I can't imagine any car to be perfect. There will always be something, somewhere.

I believe that if you look for a flaw you will find it. When I painted my car I was happy with the way it came out, to me it was "perfect" couldn't find anything wrong with it. On my way home I stopped to put gas and I noticed some bubbles on the trunk. I was mad cuz not even 1/2 an hour had passed by and I then saw it. I washed her bout a week later and didn't notice anything else. bout a month passed by and a friend was passing by my house and saw the new paint and stopped to check it out(criticize) within 5 min he had found over 7 different things wrong with the paint, runs, dirt, and bubbles. So if you want to find any defects, bring it over to my "friends" house and he will spot any thing that is out of place or wrong. So to answer you question I don't think there is a perfect paint job, I think there is always something that you or someone else will find wrong.
