ORIGINAL: blue66mustang

If it is the original 66 trans it probably is a "Green Dot" 3 speed. I have this exact trans.
If you put it in neutral and pull the shifter as far back without touching the button it will hit the detent for a1-2-3 shift. If you just put it in the "normal" drive position that we are all used to, just back from neutral,it will shift 2-3. So basicly there are 2 "Drive" positions.

I seriously doubt you got to 100 mph in "second gear" so try the above and see if that solves the problem.
wait, if i pull it from neutral as far back as i can, it will go into the low gears...which is the one for the mountains. but what about the overdrive gear, because it is a 3-speed w/overdrive

im not sure if it was in second gear, but i certainly hit 100, plus it was redlining (or atleast sounded like it) so im pretty sure it was second...and what an experience that was =D

Where is this logic coming from?

A C4 transmission does not have an "overdrive". Third gear is your final drive gear and it is a 1:1 ratio.

As the others have stated...

Did you try this?
