302 or 351W?
I went from a 351w in my 67 with 380, hp to a 500 hp 408 and I already want more 380-400hp is nothing if you can hook it up, yes if you have a peg leg 2.79 rear gear and switch from 200 hp to 400 hp it wont feel like much as all you will do is smoke the tires so it wont feel that fast part throttle will be a big difference though. For someone used to a stock 302 4bbl a 347 will be fun as will a 351w but you will want more, I guarantee it. You can drink 2 beers and get a buzz when you start, then its a 6 pack, then its a 12 pack, then....,...even more. the same apllies to horsepower..........it is an addiction too, I take people for a ride in my car and they pee their pants, to me I need about 100 hp more, my diesel pickup has more seat of the pants torque.

I emailed the guy back today and asked him if the block and crank were in good condition, so we'll see what he has to say.
I really enjoy my 351W/408, it is a blast to drive and is completely street-able. I really enjoy the power it puts out, and it sounds like a monster. The only issue that I had during the whole drop in was that the headers were tighter than I was thinking, make sure you pick those out carefully.
This is making me think I need to look into eventually changing my modified 302 to a 351W again. Afterall that's what I thought I was getting to begin with. I don't want to roast the tires at every light but I'd like to at least keep up with my brother from time to time.
Nothing feels better than the acceleration and power from a musclecar.

Well the guy emailed me back and this is what he said:
"The push rod, lifters and cam are pulled for inspection i was told it ran when pulled from car i dont know thats why im selling it @ a core price"
So he didn't really answer my question, but I asked him again whether the block and crank were in good condition.

I havent installed my 3.50 9" yet and still have my 3.00 open 8" with a 500+ hp 408 it just smokes the tires but even part throttle it will walk away from most built 289's and 302's. If you want strictly fuel economy a 289-302 with mild cam and efi or annular carb is best, if you want good MPG's and power go a mild 350-400hp 351w with an od trans and or a c-4 with 2.79-3.00 gears and build it for hp/tq under 5500 rpm, I will tell you, when I switched from a edelbrock performer style 289 to a mild stock ported head 351w w/ comp cams 268 high energy cam it was such a huge difference in power it was increadible. Mileage was actually better all the way around except at WOT where I lost about 2mpgs from what I could tell. If you want max power and decent mileage run a 393-408 with and aod or t-5 and build a 400-450 hp engine that makes max hp/tq all below 5000 rpm. I would start with a 351w though, more cubes more torque, stronger block and crank than any 289-302. I have a couple really good budget tested combos in a 351w that I have done.
