Think about this, MM&FF gets paid to advertise for AFR, don't you think it is possible that they fudged the numbers a little to help advertise for AFR? Just because they write it doesn't mean it is true. Afr makes good flowing castings, but their quality pretty much sucks other than that. Their springs and valve guides are junk too. Now, Im not bashing you personally, they do make good power, but after seeing and hearing from people that actually run them, I think they are overly exagerated.
+1
I couldn't have said it better myself, although I've tried in other threads.

Ez,
Do yourself a big favor and consider everything you read in a car magazine to be "fluff". Sit on the john, read it, and then wipe yourself with it. On a 5.0, that cam and heads'll put you in the neighborhood of 325-350HP at the crank.... maybe less.

BIG HP is just not that easy.

Here is a spec sheet on a professionally built Aluminum BB motor.

After bolting on the accessories and dynoing the car, this engine made under 600HP (585 IIRC) at the rear wheels going through a TKO600 and TracLoc.

Price tag was close to $30,000.

You can't just go out and throw a $250 cam and $1800 heads on a motor and expectnumbers anywhere near what the big $$ boys get. It's just not that easy/simple.

well **** it then...LOL

Im more worried about time slips then HP...I think ive built a pretty good foundation for a low 11 sec car. Just need the motor to push it down. Im running a martz 4 link suspension with a 9' detroit locker with 4.11's. Ive mini tubbed the rear and shortened the axle to fit 10.5' rims under the wheel well. Im running a well built AOD with a B&M shifter. Gonna experiment with a rear sway bar but doubt it will make a difference. I think the car should be able to stand up to 500+ hp. If i ever want to get into the 10's ill hook a bottle up...

As far as reading magazines and fluff...At least im doing my best to research and learn. This is the first car i have ever wrenched on and im pretty proud of myself. Ive done every bit of the work. Even taught myself how to weld. The only help i have had is from the internet and especially you guys...so all your advice is very much appreciated

Try ford strokers.com Talk to Woody. That site is highly recommended by a lot of people and he knows his ****.

How hard was the mini tub and shortening the axle? I have a friend with a 67 that I plan on doing this soon.

Mini tub was actually a lot easier than people claimed. Just used plasma cutter and welded stuff back together. Shortened the axle only 1.5' on each side. havent tried to put rear seat in though. had the place where i bought the rear shorten it. bout 300$

Yeah, we aren't saying there's anything wrong with reading the mags, they do often have great information, but when numbers start poping up like that, you have to kinda red flag it some. But like you said, I do agree you have a good foundation, and since a dyno is supposed to be used for tuning purposes only, It doesn't really matter what "numbers" you put out on one. Each dyno can be calibrated just a slight percent different and make "more or less power" than the dynoat the shop down the street. So,use a dyno to get the most outof your combo, then go to the track and let her rip.
