1965 K Code Convertible?
Remove the starter and check for the VIN on the block. K code motors got VIN numbers in 65.
It would be a shame if it was a K code car and the engine was long gone... still worth a great deal to the collector, just not as much w/o the engine.

It could be a fake. It is my understanding that the only way you could get a k-code 289 mated to a C4 automatic in 1965 was if the combo was factory installed into a Fairlane. My cousin has a 1-owner '65 Fairlane with a k-code/auto. For those who may claim BS, here's a pic -

I suspect that the '65 k-code/auto Mustang you found for saleMAY be a fake. I hope others will chime in.

MAY be a fake
Possibly, but in all of my years, I've never seen anyoneable to re-stamp an inner fender apron like the factory did. In '65, the inner fender aprons should have three VIN stampings.... 2 on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. Peel the fenders away for a quick and easy verification.

A k-code vert w/it's original k engine in decent shape? $35-50k depending on condition.
A k-code vert w/o it's original engine, figure $20-25k.
If the owner is really dumb about this and you can get the car for considerably less than these numbers, jump on it FAST. Do some quick homework to verify everything and then wrap the deal up quickly before cousin Bob comes over for a family Bar-B-Que and grabs it.

In 1965 anything was possible, maybe, if an auto/K-code was not an option , somebody pulled some strings or made a phone call and an "unavailable" option was installed in that car.
