C4 Upgrade ?
Are you looking at getting the whole kit, or just the shift kit? Also, if you are getting the whole kit, are you getting the performanc version with Kevlar clutches and bands, or just the stock rebuild kit? How much is it? What kind of power are you going to be throwing at it? We need details man, we can't just answer "is it worth it?" if we dont have any idea what its going in, how, much it costs, and how you want to use it. We simply need all the info you can practically give us so that we can make a better call on the situation.
You will be fine with the stock clutches. I have a C4 behind a 347 that makes abouts 420 HP and 400lb/ft of torque, and it still has stock style clutches and bands, and does just fine. However, to help them survive, I did install a TCI valvebody and aTCI 2nd gear servo. They put more pressure on the clutches/bands to help keep them from slipping. If you want a shift kit, thats cool, but I wouldn't reccommend you install it yourself if you haven't got a lot of experience with valvebodies. You get one checkball in the wrong spot and it can cause the trans to not shift at all, shift into more than one gear at a time, or even burn up the transmission. As far as quality, the Transgo shift kits are pretty good. They shift hard as hell when they are behind a stock torque converter. Actually, they shift so hard that I don't like them. A firm shift is good, but they literally "snap" the transmission into gear. But no, with your engine, a stock rebuild kit will do just fine. No need to spend the money on the high dollar stuff you don't need.
Thanks, just driving the car I don't feel the shift from2nd to 3rd at all. I only feel1st which is very short after taking off. I was going to take it to a performance shop and let them give some idea's. Speaking of idea's my rear gears are 3.0 and I was to replace them 3.55. I might feel the 2nd to 3rd shift with better gears?
Um, maybe, but probably not. It sounds to me like it isn't going into 1st. You should be able to feel (or at least hear the engine rpms drop)it shift both times if it is actually doing so. Have you tried shifting it manually? Also, the vaccum modulator may be out of adjustment. You can adjust that with an allen wrench by simply taking the vaccum line off of it (it comes down from the intake and plugs onto the transmission by the tailhousing) and sticking the allen wrench in there. If I remember correctly, turning it right makes it shift sooner, and turning it left makes it shift later. You may want to just do like you said and take it to a tranny shop that builds racing transmissions for older cars. They could help you out better since they could take a hands on look at the car and actually drive it.
I have this Transgo kit (performance upgrade) plus a TCI 2500 RPM torque converter and perf planetary and Transgo shift kit in my car. I'm running a 400HP at the crank 347, 325ish to the wheels in my 67 vert. I love the firm shift, its not a head snapping shift, but a firm, quality shift when you get on the gas. Can't say enough about it, of course I haven't ever had anything different but the old stock C4. As they say, if you've been driving a Schwinn your whole life and never tried anything better, you might think you have the best. who knows?
I got a Transgo 'stage 2' shift kit off ebay. Put it in a stock C4.
A definite improvment. At least I can tell when it shifts, however it still shifts too early in IMO.
I did adjust the vacuum modulator. I thought the instructions were clear and it was painless.
