So I just got done wireing a new tachometer and tested it and noticed that the engine will run as long as the key is held in the run position. Then when you release it from that position it dies. Headlamps, interior lights all work. But this problem has only happend after I installed the new aftermarket tachometer. Any ideas.

By the way I dont think I have a ballast resistor as I do hae an electronic igntion.

Did you wire it correctly. I would start with going back over the install step by step and see if everything was done correctly.

Yeah seams as though I did, I spliced into some wires but that shouldent make a difference. I took off the tach coil line and it still did it.

I hooked up a voltage meter and noticed that i lose power when i am in the on position from the coil. I get power when turn it over to start but lose it when I let go and the key slides back to the on position.

Sure sounds like a ballast resistor to me. Just cause you don't have points anymore does not mean someone bypassed it. When mine went out I traced the wireback to igntion prior to resistor (think it was the yellow one om a 1970) spliced in it and reran new wire - need to make sure you coil can handle 12 volts. I'd be willing to be that is the problem.

The ballast resistor. It's not in the circuit during starting, only when the engine is running. It's purpose is to electrically take the place of the starter and maintain balance in the circuit.

There are four teminals on your starter relay, two big one that handle the actual starter and two small ones that actuate the starter. I don't have a realy in my hands at the moment but idi you unplug either of the smaller two?

Well I dont think I have a Ballast resistor, when my dad had the car he had it switched to an electronic ignition. I dont see any little white bracket looking box near the firewall or anything that looks like a ballast resistor near it, ill look again tomorrow but I think I dont have one.

As for the starter relay again I will have to check tomorrow. Its pitch black and I beleive I might break something in anger.

Before I "go to town" tomorrow, any other ideas to look for?
