i need to convince my parents...
well heres the deal...i am going to be driving down to San Diego for college in about a week and a half (on the 27th). i live in reno, nv so its about 550miles i think (10 hours)...so my parents thinking about fuel economy bought a '99 honda accord for me to take down there. dont get me wrong, its a great car but i really cant see how spending $6200 on a honda saved us any money. im trying to convince them to sell it and let me take the mustang down...only there are some issues. it gets 12mpg, the ball joints are shot, and it needs a new pair of front tires. i figure the tires are going to run us $300, a pair of LCA $120, some upper ball joints $40ish. plus alignment and gas getting it down there it'll be around $800. my parents seem like they'd be up for it but they still need some convincing. oh and how difficult is it to replace the ball joints, i mean i know where they are and i think i know how to do it but are there any special tricks behind it? id probably look at doing the shelby drop while im in there anyways. im pretty sure thats what caused my front tires to wear out within the first like 5k miles, i had it aligned right after i had them put on.

be smart, your going away to college. Your to young to be a slave to piece meal mustang at this point in your life. Take the civic. Yes the mustang is a better car, but your friends dont want to wait for you since your car cant start and drive straight down the road with out problems. The civic will get you to and from school for 4 years with poss no problems.
The money you save with the honda can be wisely spent on beer, woman, spring break etc!!!!! When you come home from college, work on the stang. Enjoy this time in your life because classic mustangs always need work.

yeah, i mean the honda is definitely more practical...but the $6200 seems like it would be much better put towards paying down loans. plus ive been driving my mustang every day for the past year and a half with no issues except these freakin ball joints so reliability has yet to be a problem. maybe that'll change in SD for some reason but the honda is more trouble than its worth it seems like...there are problems with the title (we bought it from a lady and her ex-husbands name was on the title) so we might not be able to register it til after i leave for school which would mean no car.
i too am going away to college (university of delaware) in about a week or two. to be honest, i wouldn't take my mustang with me. i would rather keep it home with my parents nice and safe and drive it when i visit.
i wouldn't risk driving my 68 as a DD, especially with all the **** that happens driving it once in a while. i take pride in my mustang. it is my pride and joy and will always be with me.
it is a fun idea to bring the stang along to college, but i wouldn't risk the DD sh!it and general college **** that goes on. i mean would you really want some drunk *** friends throwing up in your back seat. F**K NO. you probably worked too hard on that thing for that; i know i have.
sorry if this wasn't what you wanted to hear, but your stang will not be respected over there. it will be transportation. if you want, bring some friends home to see the stang and cruise.

lol...crap, well i guess we'll see. idk, its only been in the garage since wednesday and im already having withdrawals. i did spot a red '68 mustang coupe with white stripes on campus when i went down in april to check everything out...it was pretty nice.
where are you planning on going?
i think i may know the owner of that said 68 coupe, lol, did it have a shelby front end and a supercharger whistle?
i dunno, if your coming to SD, your either going to UCSD or SDSU, IF your going to UCSD then do it, basically everyone there is a panzy and wouldnt do **** to your car, SDSU is teh ghetto, dont bring it

My 67fb has been my daily driver for college for a long time. I did take a year or so to rebuild the engine when I went back home for a while, but other than that I've gotten away with it. I don't think most people would be as tolerant as I am, though. Most people want a car that's going to be ready whenever they want to go somewhere. My car isn't that. I have to warm it up every time I fire it up, and there are quirks that a lot of people wouldn't want to deal with. I'll hitch rides, walk, bike, or take the scooter (my mom donated a '79 Vespa to me this year) when my car's down for projects, and most people won't want to deal with that either.
So basically, unless you're willing to deal with a finicky project car and will have a place to work on it, take the civic. It's more reliable and it gets MUCH better mileage.

Depends on what school your going to, but usually college students dont even need a car, let alone want one. And if your the only person who has a car, everyone will be bumpin rides off of you to get places, wastin your gas, time, and money.
if the cars not up to snuff take the civic
it probably has ac etc also if you dont have full coverage theres no way id consider taking the classic to college
whatever shop that aligned your car with bad ball joint should be shot
balljoints are simple pretty much a bolt on deal this is how to get the ball joint loose form the spindles the easiest. http://www.mustangsplus.com/tech/sho...shockfall1.htm
but for the lowers id just replace the entire lower control arm, i'd bet money the bushings are shot unless you replaced them
