Default Alternator Wiring

Hello everyone Im new to the formum

I did a search and didn't find an answer.

1969 Mustang small v8... (given to me by my okd man)

The car sat for 3 years and i put a new battery in the car and he had previously put in a new alternator and selnoid.

Finally got the car to start but after 20 minutes running i pulled the neg off the battery and the car shut down.

I looked at the alternator wiring but I have a question. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for how the wired dhould be hooked up because looking at the alterator there is a red/black wire that goes to the altenator to a screw on the left side looking at the alternator from the front. Same angle but right side is a screw that has a RED plastic grommet that is empty. Is the wire that is Black/Red supose to be screw on there or is it right.

I assume that something is wrong because the car went dead after pulling the neg off the battery, so it must be wiring.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to our section of MF. The negative on your battery is a part of the circuit for the alternator.

Soaring, he should be able to pull off the neg and not kill. Mine wont kill if I pull the neg anyways. I could drive around with no battery, and as long as I dont kill, I would be good.

Here is a page from the 1969 Shop Manuals (worth MORE than the $60 for the FIVE-BOOK SET)

In case your alternator is aftermarket;
I was kind of **** and took pics of stuff before I took it out of my car:

Thank you for the pictures.

The picture in the manual is what I am after i think.

There are 2 screws on the top of the alternator.

1 has a red type grommet inside the screw which nothing is attached to and the other top screw has a black with red strip wire attach to it. Shouldn't this be routed to the other screw as i believe this is shorting out the alternator which means that the battery is being used to run the car. When I remove the neg the car shuts down. Is there any way you can attached a bigger picture that I can see the page 3 better as I can't see the wording or pictures too well even if I download them and try in increase there size. Does the above make sense about the wiring or is this okay to have the black with red stripe attached to the alternator from the front left side.'

Thanks
Michael

Get a manual for your specific year of Mustang. Through the years, and even within specific years, they were all wired differently. Some got the ground from the firewall, and as Mustang 1969 shows it as the blue wire is attached to the solenoid ground on the fender well.
What's up with that southern engineering? And others got the ground from the battery negative terminal. Spend the 40 bucks to get a manual.
