Sounds like a pretty fun little project. My buddy had a XR4Ti and I've got an SVO, the 2.3T's a great little motor and you should have a bunch of fun with it. Good luck and keep us updated!

*removed coil
*removed battery
*pulled dizzy
*removed carb

this weekend i will probably
*drain all the fluids out
*remove the radiator
*remove all the accessories from engine
*remove rusty battery tray
*check the rusted parts that i can while engine is still in

updates after i forgot

The front end is almost apart to hunt down any rust bugs, having some trouble with some fender bolts, so i am soaking them in WD-40.
*note... a jack and jack stands make this process much smoother, after my day of working i promptly went and picked some up*

bumper is off,
front fascia is off,
grill is out,
fender bolts are out save the few rusted ones,
head lights are out,
removed most of the accessories

next on my list as soon as i get another pan...
drain the fluids
-oil
-radiator
-transmission
remove the engine from the blue mustang
remove all wiring.

now for some questions
what is the difference between a C4 and a C5 is it just cooling or what?
Are there any direct swap 8.8's for 67's
what kind of converter would be best?

As far as i can remember the c5 has a locking torque converter to it.

iirc the merkur doesnt use a c5 tranny or a t5 manual it uses something different.

the c5 is pretty much the same as a c4 but with metric fasteners and lockup converter

ok thats what i was wondering, the merkur uses a T9 for manual and a C3 for auto transmission, and it's all screwed up, i hate the dang thing, but that's why i've got a C5 in the car now.

How does the converter make a difference?

OK im reviving this thread, i was able to make some headway on the cars... i am down to trying to find out how to mount the motor, then it will just be a matter of hooking them up and cranking them.

either of you two 2.3t swappers got any leads on that one?
