Guessing it was not original to the car, since the largest engine in a Mustang for 1972 was a 351.

A 429 for $450.00? Must not be in good running condition. Sounds really cheap for what you get. I could be wrong though...wish I had the money to buy it and build it up. It would be sweet in my 69 till I had to stop at every other gas station when I went for a cruise.

That is more than I want to spend on my trotline weight, so I will pass. If you want a big block, stay away from the 429. There was a thread about a month back talking about 429 vs 428, 427, 390. 429 was a truck motor and the torque curve is terrible for a Mustang. They are really not that desirable. The 428 and 427 are MUCH better suited for a light car and their power band is up where you can use it.

As with any engine it's all about how you build it. My brother-in-law just took his '64 Fairlane to Bonneville with a 429 based engine and ran 211mph. Ford is also releasing a new 460 based crate engine later this year. Don't forget that the '71 Mustangs came with the 429 SCJ which is still a desirable engine today as are to D0VE and D1VE heads. The FE's are good engines as are the 385's, it's all about what combo of heads, intake, cam, carb, etc....you use. And the 385's are cheaper and lighter than the FE's, that's why Ford switched in the first place.
