Wink damn california!!!

i got a 66 mustang from cali. it has all this smog stuff on there.....looks like it'll come off easy enough, but then i noticed two tubes running alongside the heads that attach right on the top?? of the heads. can these be removed/plugged?? i don't need different heads do i?

for those two tubes, do you mean the ones on the valve covers? one goes to your air cleaner and the other is the PCV valve that goes to your carb. They are to re-burn some gases in your engine and keep the pressures and all that right I guess

there are two.....rails (metal, about 3/4" dia) i guess you could call them.....with 4 tubes (metal, about 1/4" dia) coming out of each rail going into the cylinder head right below the valve cover

Don't wreck that stuff. So many people ripped off all the smog components that they've become rare. Someone out to make an original car many need it and be willing to give you a few bucks for it.

eBay.

I agree with Oxnard. To the right guy that motor and stuff is hard to find.

Just disconnect the belt from the smog pump. It won't cause any harm.
Those weren't exactly performance heads and cam anyway.

If you want performance, think about selling the original motor, as is, and getting a newer one.

The smog pump was used to inject cool fresh air into the exhaust to prevent formation of NOX and bad gases that formed after combustion.

Actually, air injection was used to burn off unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust. It has no effect on NOx production.

I believe you can remove those tubs and plug the holes (with special plugs available from Mustang vendors), but I haven't done it personally.

I didn't realize that 66's had smog equipment on them in any state. I thought they began to put them on in 69 or so.

But that original smog equipment is very rare now. I have seen people pay an arm and leg for the setup. I agree with those said above sell your original drivetrain or take it off intact. Concours car people will hunt your stuff down because there is no numbers matching for 66's and take your drivetrain if the date code similar as theirs.
