thank-you guys so much, getting into gear is perfect now, i just have one other question, the guy i bought the car from had a problem with the car stalling out when he gave it the gas when he was driving too, should i assume that, that is cured as well?

well maybe

Im still thinking there could be a vacuum leak..you saw some type of vapor from under the carb.

With the engine running in idle lightly spray carb cleaner around the base of the carb and around the carb body as well (could be a loose fitting as well)...listen for the engine to change tune.

PS the stuff is flammable so use caution make sure you have no source of ignition near by (like a damaged plug wire....its pretty safe but be careful)

no if it sounds the same then you should be good to go.

The idea is a vac leak creates suction. the suction draws in the carb cleaner vapor which momentarily changes the air fuel mix causing the engine to run different. If there is no leak then no vapor gets in and the fuel mix doesnt change.

Drive it around and see if it feels good.

well by the end of this year if your parents are still oblivious that anything has gone wrong you are indeed a master of trickery and deceit.

on the bright side your persistence saved you over 60.00 bucks and nothing really goes wrong with these cars that you cant fix in the driveway after consulting this forum.

keep the oil clean and replace all the rad hoses, spark plugs, and plug wires and make sure the air cleaner is clean and finally add a good fuel filter and you will be set for a long time engine wise
