Fuel problems
Hey guys, I'm new here, but I believe this is the best place for help, anyways I have a 66 coupe with a 200, my problem is if I'm in park or neutral and give it the gas its fine but as soon as I go into drive or reverse the car dies. Has anyone had this problem? The only thing I can think of it being is shes not getting enough fuel.
first off are you letting the car warm up? If you have a manual choke, which if your engine is stock you do, you need to let the engine warm up and the choke will adjust properly. Like BA said check your idle and also fuel mixture ratio. Lastly what octane gas are you using? In the 60's leaded gas had octane in the mid to high 90's, if your running on regular 87 octane gas the engine will run, but not as well. The lack of combustion from the lower octane might be part of the problem
im not a member of the fordsix forum so i have to wait to get approved, and if i floor it in park it revs up fine, just as soon as its in gear it isnt getting gas (i assume) and im using regular so i guess that could be part of it, and i just want to let you guys know that im 17 and this is my first car and im trying to learn to do everything myself so im sorry for my incompetence.

wellllll did you check your idle speed as suggested?
Find the throttle linkage...
find where it connects to the carb...
find a screw somewhere near that connection....
examine it and see if turning it to the right will force the throttle plates open a bit more

alright, i cant hear it idleing faster but i let it warm up and i put it in gear with alittle more gas and she ran fine, in drive and reverse, but when i shut her off there is alittle bit of smoke that comes out from underneath the carb idk if its oil burning or rubber from a hose or something
there must be an idle adjust screw some place...you should hear the difference. you should be able to see the end of the screw. The end of the screw should touch some type of metal arm that is connected to the throttle in one way or another. by turning the screw in it jams the throttle plates open just a bit and increases the idle.
Also check for a vacuum leak.. Take carb cleaner and spray it around the base of the carb. if you hear the engine change tune as in rev up or bog down you need a new gasket for that spot.
