Default 66 Engine Compartment Paint???

Can anyone tell me with a little bit of certainty if the engine compartment on a 66 was semi-flat black or semi-gloss black. I have been told both and would really like to do it correctly as I am detailing it while my 289 is out of the car. I know the motor and valve covers are blue, just not sure of the correct black-------

I appreciate your help getting is right!

Depends on the finish. A smooth finish will end up more glossy. If you sand it really smooth, I'd use the semi-flat. If you just give it a quick run down, semi-gloss.

What is the difference between semi-flat and semi-gloss? Thanks!

Moonweasel, semi-flat has more of a dull finish, semi-gloss has just that, a glossy, shiny, "eggshell" appearance. I have posted this on 2 different mustang forums and have gotten lots of responces, about half say flat and half say gloss. I guess I'll never know??? I do appreciate everyones help though!

The problem was that Ford wasn't too worried about the finish of the engine bay. You'll see lots of drips in a factory engine bay. They just sprayed it with their idea of 'chassis black', iirc.

Like I said, if you sand it down really smooth, use the semi-flat because it will come out glossier than planned. If you just clean it, scuff it, and spray it, semi-gloss will come out less glossy than planned.
