Default tunes and tuneups

What is the difference between a tune, and a tuneup? ANd if a tune is different does it need to be done to a carbureted engine. I ask this because a week ago I heard a ticking noise in what seemed to be the heads. THe exhaust would pop here and there, and a horrible smell would come from this. My mechanic took both valve covers off too see what was the problem, and he told me the heads and rockers seem to be in good shape. HE turned the car on and the noise became louder maybe coming from one of the pistons. So now he has to break down my less than 500 mile engine apart. Would a tune prevent this kind of problem? I want to take more precautions this time around, because this is engine is costing major headaches. I will probably buy msd plugs, distributor and ignition to provide more quality.

a tune is done on a new car where a program is burned or flashed in the PCM or handheld tuner

a tune up is maintainence(plugs,carb adjust,wires)

pretty much as said above but id say that a tune is going beyond the factory specs for more power and a smoother running engine.

then the tuneup like said above all the normal wear and tear parts changed to new

That"s BS, a tune and a tune up are exactly the same when it comes to older cars with non-computerized ignition.

So does anyone know why my engine would knock, and what I need to do to prevent this next time? i know with 93 pump gas it was running, so I think i was using the right gas.

you have good oil pressure? might have the timing set to high causing detonation

I think it all started one day when i mashed on the gas, and the exhaust started popping. You could hear a tick, and the exhaust fumes smelled bad. Sometimes it would run good and sometimes it wouldn't. Last week it started doing, it would have low oil pressure but when you hit the gas it would raise. WE checked the engine heard a ticking noise. TOok it to our mechanic, he took the valve covers off, and this is when the loud knocking started. Tommorrow, he is planning to break the engine down to find the problem, but I want to know what caused this, and what can I do to prevent it. Seems liek msd ignition is a good way to go with helping in combustion and timing.
