Question 1970 Speedometer cable question.

Why is there an electrical connection on the speedometer cable? All I can figure out is it is a speedometer location sensor for the emission controls..? Do I need this when replacing the old cable with a new one? I ordered a new one and it came without it. Any idea's?

On my 70 fastback there wasn't an electrical connection on my speedo cable at all,the original or the replacement.Have you traced the connection to see where it goes or tested it to see if there is any power to it?

I will go down to the shop tonight when I get home and look at mine to see if there is anything on the cicuit near the speedo cable. The only possiblity I can think of is maybe the High beam pony in the middle.

BTW In case you didnt know...the new speedo cable should work fine without any electrical connections. It is run by the tranny

Default speedo

It's listed in the Chilton manual as an emissions control device used to tell where the speedometer cable position is..??

Yes I know Jeff thanks,That is why it stumped me to find this on a 1970 and for them to tell me it was for emission controls..... in 1970???

I'm just going to delete it and use my new cable,But I wanted to check to see if not having it installed might activate some sort of override system? or something.

my car had that thing it was by the pedals. round with two wires coming out of it. the speedometer cable was 2 pieces tranny to sensor, then sensor to speedometer. i replaced it with a one piece speedometer cable tranny to speedometer. no problems. it was connected to a plastic box with two vaccum lines hooked to it if im not mistaken. i ripped that out as well.
