i vote MGD, miller chill, or any other horrendous beer out there.

i would try some simple green or regular engine degreaser. the brake cleaner may do hard to the paint.

Not sure how high of pressure youd really want to use. id probably only use a regular garden hose nozzle if any real pressure at all

i use an electric power washer. (partly cuz i dont have a gas one and second, preasure is a little intense on those things.) and a few bottles of simple green. do it about twice a year, but my engine bay is kinda grungy anyway, so im not real picky right now

if you try any of the **** in the can beers, let us know how it goes! you could have the next miracle cleaner!

If I remember back far enough I think I covered the distributor and carb with a plastic bag. Did I miss anything?

Don't forget to cover the alternator. Water will ruin the bearings in it.

And don't be suprised if won't start for a day or so. Even covering stuff, water seems to find a way to get something wet that it shouldn't. If it won't start up afterward, wait a day and try it again.

I usually clean the carb with carb cleaner, then bag it up and use Simple Green on the rest of the engine. When I spray off the engine, I try not to concentrate the water on the Alt, Valve cover breathers, Wiring Blocks, or the Distributor.

An old trick for bringing back discolored hoses or paint (NOT ALUMINUM) is spraying with clearcoat.
