Replacing fuel pump... need some pointers please!
Hey all,
It's been some time since I have been around as I've not had much time to spend with my old girl. But now I am back and need some advice.
For quite awhile now, I have had a very small leak out of my fuel pump as indicated by a constant drip hanging off the bottom. I have ignored it plenty long and now the leak is so damned bad, I am losing more gas than I'm burning. It's bad, really bad. Like gushing out when I'm idling.
I've got that chrome job from Mr Gasket and probably will replace with the same thing.
So what I am hoping to get from you guys since I have never done this before...
Maybe if someone could direct me to a brief step by step in how I should disconnect the hoses and if I should use any loc tite (i can see that the fittings now have some of that white plumbing tape on them...probably not a good idea?? ...should I get new fittings, I will be replacing the fuel filter (you can see in the pic below that it is located down by the fuel pump right now...)
Are there any steps I need to take to make sure that the fuel is going to flow when I hook it all back up? Any other tips or things I might expect to come across?

I was hoping someone would tell me its that simple. So when I hook the lines back up again, is there going to be an issue with oxygen in there or will the carb just burp it out? Feel free to mock me for my ignorance.

yeah plus you will have gas in the carb so it will run while it reprimes itself. if you have any problems you can apply a little air pressure to the tank while someone turns the motor over it will send the fuel right up there

Why would I need to replace the filter again? Just out of curiosity... BTW, my filter is on the line between the fuel pump and the tank, not up by the carb, if that is what you are getting at?
That is where my filter has always been since I bought the car. Should I be doing it differently?

just like any filter, its good to be changed.
just take a quick look at it see if theres any gunk on it or if its discolored. you can get a cheap one from the Mr Gasket section at kragens for pretty cheap. or head over to vic hubbard in hayward and they have a selection im sure.

Yeah I got a new filter ready to go. Its just that photocliff was saying that I should start it with the old filter, then install the new one later. I was wondering if he was assuming my filter is between the pump and the carb, not between the pump and the tank like it is right now.
Also, I was wondering where the best place to have the filter would be.

If you look at that pic, you can see where I have the filter right now, to the right of the pump. That is where the PO had it and I have never changed it.
