I have 2 on my engine....one before the pump like you and one after...they both get crap from my gas tank...new tank in the box ready to go in before the engine goes back in.

I would suggest two filters, one before and one after the pump. When I ran a carb I only had one after the pump before the carb, pumps are cheep, carbs get expensive..

 

Also if it is hard to put back on, spin the motor over, dont start it, as it will move the lobe on the cam away from the pump arm.

I got the new pump in this evening. She works great again so I think I have it all squared away.

BTW, 65Fastback... Your advice was spot on. I had my bro turn the key just slightly til the pump arm fit in easy. That was key to giving me peace of mind when I hooked up the lines and fired her up.
