Default Motor ID ?

So my friend took the valve covers off his 67 ,289 and stampeed on valve heads it reads 302 . So is the motor a 302 or just the heads or do we have to remove the starter for the engine code to be sure.He got the car under the impression it was a 289 , I think there has been a motor swap. What do you think?

Will the 302 heads work on the 289 block?

yup.....when i bought my 1st car (a 68 sprint), one head was a 289 and one was a 302. never knew if it was part of a mid-year switch at the factory or if someone did it afterwards.

you will need to check on the engine code to be sure.
but there miught be a chance that when someone came up with the idea of putting on 302 stock heads that the whole engine has been replaced.

Thanks for the input. I just now have to convience my friend to pull the starter to get the block code. I don't think he really wants to know.I think it shouldn't matter he has a real nice 67 vert that has been restored well and looks great .
