Default '67 Mustang Engine Swap Question

So I am building a performance 460 and i've recently started to wonder what I could fit it into.

I know that most good looking cars cannot hold a 460.

So my question for you fellow mustang owners:
What must I do to the car to MAKE the 460 fit?

Any and all imput appriciated.
And if it comes down to it. I'll find another kind of car to plop it into. Hoping it doesn't because I have been offered a '67 mustang for reletivly cheap.

Thanks.

i think theres a kit going around some where to make it fit but im not exactly sure. i know you can change your front suspension to make it fit but not sure on exactly what to do either.

I thought I would ask because my dad said that he had a Mustang race car and he was going to put a 460 in it but it wouldn't fit between the shock towers.

I know i'll have to do suspension work because of the extra weight but i'm just curious in general of the work. If it will fit in between the frame alright or if it needs modification.

yeh it wont directly fit you need to do suspension work such something like elimination the shock tower completely. something like http://www.aeroform.com/steering.html (the coil over suspension) will eliminate the tower and let the engine fit. there are other cheaper ways to eliminate it but dont know those.

i have a pal thats doing the same thing, as he said above me you will need to get rid of the shock towers, but doing this will weaken your frame and i you will need to buy a different type of export brace, and i suggest some kind of chassis brace, and id also suggest getting a rack and pinion set up

No you don't have to cut out the shock towers that is only the 64-66 cars the 67-73 both big blocks fit fine. Most mustang part houses sell the motor mounts and headers to do this or even http://www.mpgheads.com/ has a kit.You will need the big block front springs and if you got front drums disc are a must and you'll need a 9 inch rear end to handle the power it will have. The only downside i see is you have to take off the cross member to clear the oil pan you can fab up one to fit tho.But unless you want a drag car id sell the 460 and get a nice small block.

I think it will fit. Its the same outside dimension as an FE right?

If you already have the engine, disregard this statement: dont get a 460, get an FE. The 390 FE was a standard option in '67.

Also take a visit over to FordFE.com for some helpful people:

Nope (boldface mine).

Ford 385-Series Family

  • Although there were several variations to the engines of the 385-series family, only two displacements were available---the 429 cubic inch and the 460 cubic inch. Both were introduced in 1968 and lasted until 1973. These engines were heavier and larger than Ford's predecessor---the FE Family.

Then you would have to do a lot of work to get it to fit. Most likely switching to a Mustang II style front suspension as well as removing the shock towers. I would say the ride quality will be pretty bad as you would have to have a high spring rate to accommodate that 460. Is this going to be a drag car only?

The damn thing is a boat anchor!

I put one in my 1970 Mustang. I clearanced the shock towers slightly, but that was more to get headers to fit (I had to make those). I'll post a picture when I get home tonight.
