Lightbulb 69 roof conversion

Ok i am pretty new here don't even have a mustang simply researching and figured you guys know better than me i want to get a 69 fastback now these cars are pricey especially a pile of scrap which they charge 3-4 grand for in the ny metro area now on the other hand i could get a running perfect 69 coupe for 4-6000 dollars now working on the car im prepared to do and if the rear interior is sacrificed i do not care what body work would have to be done to convert the coupe to the fastback iv'e looked at 68's which have been chopped and wish it were just the same and as well how much would it cost

geeze it seems like everyone wants to convert to a fastback (it's called a sportroof for 69 and up btw). My suggestion is don't do it, the amount of money it would take to convert it to a sportroof would far exceed buying and building a real sportroof. Also it will take a looot of time in order for it to be "perfect" and I could see interior pieces being hard to fit. Also the interior pieces are very hard to find for fastbacks/sportroofs. And say it was done perfectly and came out great, it will still have the vin of a coupe and won't be worth nearly as much as a real sportroof.

just some things to think about, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I would suggest that you keep an eye open for a nice sportsroof from a southern state. Check online, auto magazines whatever. If you can, make a road trip down and see the car before finalizing the sale. I know it sounds extreme but believe me if you put the extra effort in finding what you want you'll save yourself countless hours and dollars down the road. Worst case scenario you have to have the car transported to NY, but still that'll only cost ~$1500 at most. A conversion would cost quite a bit, just the labor would probably run you upwards of a few grand, with the conversion body parts probably about $1500-2000 if you buy them new, less if you can find a nice donor car. Although if you could find a nice fastback you probaby wouldn't be doing the conversion. I'm no expert but I'd say a conversion would run anywhere from $3000-$5000. For that price plus the cost of the coupe you could get a nice rust free Mach 1 that will really hold value.

Your looking a easy 6 to 8 grand total to make a coupe in to a sports roof when you can buy a real one for that fix the rust and have a nice car.Just remember the vin will show its a coupe so you can't sell for the sport roof price. There is one site that sells the sheet metal only to swap the roofs and its about 3k then you need the rear glass a ton of hard to get interior parts you can dump a ton in it.Just save up and buy a sport roof that's driveable or be happy with a coupe. For 3 to 4 grand if buy every sport roof i see.Every mustang fastback/sport roof here 65-70 sells for 8 grand even a rusted to hell pile of junk.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the windshield different between a coupe and sportsroof for the 69-70 body style? I want to say the windshield is sloped back a little more on the sportsroof. I know the Mustang parts catalogs list a different windshield for them. That makes me wonder if the cowl could be different as well.

Yeah all the glass is different. On a coupe the rear qtr window rolls down whereas a fastback its a pop out vent, the windshield is different, and the sideglass is different, and obviously the rear glass.

there is a LOT of work involved in this, and by your post, it sounds like you're young... this is an extreme project that takes serious skill from master bodymen, let alone joe blow off the street.

pass on the idea and be happy with a coupe.

Coupes Suck..LMAO everyone wants a sportsroof. I want a 85 country square wagon so I can cut off the roof and and a 1980 ford stepside box to it,maybe add some 8inch 6 foot tall diesel stacks out the rear passengers seat. I can see it now. It would scream COOOOOOOOOL!!!

Another vote for the "You'll spend way more time and money changing a coupe to a sportsroof than you would if you got a sportsroof to start with" crowd. Metal work, trim pieces, glass, interior, none of that is cheap, especially for a '69--we get the short straw and the high prices for parts compared to the other years in most cases.

And when it's all done, you end up with a sportsroof looking thing with the vin saying it's a coupe. There's nothing wrong with a coupe btw, they can be just as mean looking as the sportsroof.
