65 six cyl 170 auto.

I have the engine out for new rings and bearings. Noticed a hole in the bellhousing. Took it off and epoxyed it up nice. I replaced the housing, put the car in nuetral, gave it a push, but the whole tranny kinda kicks and rolls. Took the housing back off.... the car rolls perfect. Put the housing back on...tranny kicks and rolls. Took the housing off again...car rolls fine. Put the bolts through the plate (without the housing)....car rolls fine.

Can someone please tell me what is going on? Could there be something behind the plate that moved and is getting sandwiched when I tighten the housing bolts?
