Difference between case and pan fill?
I am in the market for new C4 tranny, and I see they list the two different types. What exactly are the differences between a case fill and a pan fill?? Don't they both have a dipstick to check fluid levels?
It appears the pan fill and case fill transmissions have different bell housings (pump mount vs. case mount) (five bolt vs. six bolt). The flexplates are different. The input shaft are different too. What engine do you have? Here is an article all about c4s.

The car was originally a 6 cyl, and the P O put in a 302. I don't know what year the block was from, but he did install a roller cam in it. Is there any way to tell by looking at it? I could take a look underneath to see what it looks like.
The case fill C4 has the dipstick enter the transmission through the case, the dipstick in the pan fill goes directly into the pan. If the engine has the original intake manifold you can check the date, just look for the part code, otherwise you'll have to get under the car and check behind the starter. If you want to decode the date the first digit will be the decade(A=40's, B=50's...) and the second will be the year. An engine with a date code of C7AA was built in 1967. If you post the part code I can even tell you what model the engine came from.
