need some brake help!!
hello,
i just bought my grandpas 70 mustang fastback and need to replace the brakes. it has drums on all four wheels. i dont have alot of money since i am a college student and just bought the car.. eventually i would like to have disc brakes on all 4 wheels.. Is there an easier and cheaper way of putting disc brakes on it or should i just rebuild the drums and where can i get complete rebuild kits for drum brakes?
thanks in advance!!

Well, it kinda depends on what needs to be replaced. You can get an OE style front disc kit for under $550 now, which I'd heartily recommend if you can afford it. I put a similar setup on my 67 and I love it.
Whether or not it's a better idea right now depends on how much money you have and how bad your current brakes are. If you need to replace just about everything in the drum system, a front disc conversion may be a better way to go. But if you can get away with nothing but a set of shoes, using your current setup will be cheaper.
I'd recommend taking the car to a chain shop and having them do a "free" brake inspection. Places like sears and midas will often inspect the car for "free" (meaning you get charged $15 or so if you don't do the work there) and tell you exactly what needs to be replaced, saving you the hassle of taking it apart and having it sit while you wait for parts.
As far as rear discs go...I'd suggest finding other, more important things to do with the car long before you think about that. Drums are fine on the rear for a street car. Discs are overkill for anything that doesn't see track use.
